Foraging for flowers is one of my favourite pastimes, and these blossoms were an unexpected pleasure.
Gracing a Dogwood tree we pass on our morning walk with the dogs, they called out to me. (I now know what these are called thanks to Catherine from Smashing Plates Tablescapes – thanks Catherine!) It took some ungraceful maneuvering to leap up and catch the branch, but I managed. A quick snip and we were on our way.
They immediately brought to mind the Cherry Blossom Runner I purchased a while ago from Williams Sonoma, now online it in the reverse colour scheme, blue on white, while mine is white on blue.
I love the clean, uncluttered look of blue and white.
Whitewashed rattan placemats (sadly, discontinued) from Pier 1 formed the foundation.
Navy Pacifica dinner plates topped with Queen Anne Pillivuyt salad plates, both from Williams Sonoma, formed the next layer.
Navy Hemstitch napkins from Pier 1 and Nest napkin rings from Ballard Designs top the plates. I tucked a single blossom into each napkin ring.
Trestle glasses from Fitz & Floyd provided a similar “feel” to the white cherry blossoms on the runner.

I finished up with a few details, like little bird figurines and open mesh candleholders, both from Harvest of Barnstable, in Yarmouth, Mass. and some small white open salts from heaven knows where (I’ve had them for years).
I never get tired of blue and white! And with a little help from Mother Nature on the flower side, it was a very happy day to set a table.

Hi Susan. That’s a wonderful idea. People do often ask how I store it all, so I’d be happy to share. In short, I keep most of the delicate/antique glassware in a big butler’s pantry in Canada and a couple of china cabinets in the Cape, so it doesn’t get jounced around much. I use Home Essentials Canvas cases for most of the modern or more sturdy vintage tableware and I store those on shelves in the basement. I switch up the “daily china” in the kitchen seasonally which involves hauling some canvas cases up from the basement. It’s quite an endeavour, seasonally, but it’s good exercise. I like to use different modern sets daily, and I always have a plain white set going, and in the Cape, the Juliska Berry and Thread is always in operation, too. Dogwoods are my favorite! Sadly, I can’t grow them here where we live. Too much limestone in our ground. Dogwoods love acidity. I surely enjoyed yours today, though. The blooms are stunning against the blue. Completely lovely!
