Scenes from favourite Christmas carols are captured in this set of eight old-fashioned plates by Pottery Barn, produced a few years ago.
The style of the scenes is typical of wrapping paper, Christmas cards and postcards from the 1950s and 1960s.
It was a bit of challenge to land on a unifying theme, as the colours and depictions were all so different. For the under plate, I went with English Countryside by Mikasa. The plates are quite large, and the textured border framed the salad plates nicely. The bakelite handled cutlery echoed the creamy tones in the dinner plates.
I landed on a plain burlap runner from Save-on-Crafts for the centre of the table. It’s neutral and a bit rustic.
I debated several different napkins, from plaids to stripes, but settled on red paisley with grapevine napkins rings. The muted green and brown tones in the napkins and the grapevine continued the natural theme.
Finally, I added a centrepiece of pine cones and birch wood, along with some sage green tree and bird candles from Pottery Barn a few years ago, which usually grace the mantelpiece in our family room. That seemed to do the trick.

And Home For The Holidays. I managed to compile all eight from the set through a few different e-Bay purchases. I note that a vendor on Etsy has a full set on offer right now, complete with the original box, if anyone is interested.
A friend of mine gave me this lovely hand-painted Christmas ball from Poland this year for Christmas. I just love it.

It tied in with the theme, beautifully, so onto the table it went, too.
The antique gold twist-stemmed Venetian goblets from Elise Abrams Antiques are fairly plain, and have the same soft tones as the rest of the table.
And for a touch of fun, a salt & pepper shaker in the form of a red truck with a Christmas tree. The tree comes off and is the salt shaker.
The tree candles from Pottery Barn are a wonderful, soft shade of sage green.
Closer and closer, Christmas creeps! We are almost finished the little playhouse under the stairs. Glenn is in the midst of cutting the foam tile for the floor, and I have to paint the door, but that’s about it. I can’t wait to show you the finished product, later this week. I hope the little ones are as excited about it as we are. One of the best things about being grandparents is creating memorable experiences for grandchildren, like baking cookies, reading stories and building special spaces just for them. So much fun!

So classic and pretty, I can picture not waiting and making this tablescape for “Christmas in July” during last weekend in July heatwave for example. Fun to decorate an X- mas themed party but serve summer fare like brats, baked beans, tater salad and rainbow sherbet and such. Why wait until winter. Festive plates and peace on Earth sounds wonderful any time of year
