Boo!
All ready for some Halloween fun? We’ve got a haunted house and a bunch of black cats all ready to yowl.
This creative set of black cat-themed plates by 222 Fifth is a fairly recent offering. I missed it in stores, but eBay came to my rescue as I was gearing up for the prowling season. Four furry felines slink across the grey harlequin checked backgrounds.
This guy seems more scared than scary. The spider’s got him spoked.
His more relaxed buddy is taking a snooze on a wrought iron fence, looking as though he’s been gently lulled to sleep in the lap of the crescent moon.
Purring among the stars and the golden pumpkins, this one says “Join me?”
And prowling, panther-like, with that half sleepy expression so often seen on confident cats.
Shortly before I set this table, we were out to dinner at Brewster Fish House and were introduced to a delightful Zinfandel, Boneshaker from New Zealand. Who could resist?
Glittery gold pumpkins and gourds from Pier 1 picked up the gilded theme of the plates…
… along with chicken wire covered jars from Harvest of Barnstable.
Antique gold-swirl Venetian goblets from Elise Abrams Antiques raised the tone of the table a bit.
And a black haunted house from the Oriental Trading company brought it back down to earth.
Black twig cutlery and fiddlehead napkin rings from World Market joined in, as did some Nocturne dinner plates by Royal Prestige. I’d never heard of that manufacturer before, but the plain black and gold rim fits any number of themes from Halloween to New Year. I’m sure they’ll join us for many tables.

They look downright diabolically demented, don’t they? They’re by Blue Clay Pottery. I got them on eBay.
I had a ton of fun with this crowd of kitties.

Hi Helen, and thanks for another wonderful table. Those wizards are wild indeed! I have some square Pier 1 beaded dinner plates in that curry colour, and I find them endlessly useful in fall. They pair well with our beloved amethyst. I could die for the Venetian glasses, with their subtle glow of gold fleck. Many decades ago I went on a 90+ degree day to see them blown and formed, but I was a starving student and couldn’t afford them. Now I can’t afford them because they would probably cost the new kitchen…sigh. I see the dish(es) ran away with the (runcible) spoon(s) again…lol
There was a wonderful kitchen gadgets store called the Runcible Spoon in what was originally Stanford White’s casino in Newport Rhode island. On one wall and they had a large tile mosaic of a vignette from the Owl and the Pussy Cat. I loved it. I think the store is gone now, sadly.
Venetian glass is a bit pricey. It’s also intriguigely light in the hand, as it contains no lead and it’s blown very thin, hence not very durable. I take take thr greatest care of that particular lot. It’s not for vigorous toasting at the end of a bosky evening!
Long ago we adopted an orphan racoon. It wore a collar, walked on a lead in public, and was called Pobble…

It isn’t Halloween without a clowder of cats … especially black ones! Love the plates and the kitty wizards. Halloween is going to be fun at your house.
I love this, I always appreciate Halloween décor that is fun rather than macabre. The only thing this table needs is a sweet Dundee kitty to pose!
That sweet Dundee is sporting a new collar and name tag. I’m in stitches watching him wrestle with it,unsure if it’s friend or foe! He finally reached a rapprochement by grasping the tag between his teeth and carrying it around proudly, as though it were a captured rodent.
Love the ” ghostly” pure white napkins in their rings. Great idea. Helen, I’m definitely ripping you off and using it this Halloween. Can’t wait. Boo!
The depictions of the lounging cats nail it. The artist clearly knows his/her felines.
I plan on setting my first table using black plates/ Autumn theme for our wedding anniversary next month. Plan on 8. I’m rusty. Looking here for inspiration with high hopes. You make it look effortless! If they arrive intact, my black plates have subtile Jack & Sally “Nightmare before Christmas” romantic couple silhouette, garnet & black roses. Need tablecloth. Need green veg for only half of guests like brocoli I plan to serve. Help, Helen. LOL
I like how you do black sweet/ spooky plates here but other tones are light & soft.
