Painting china was an approved activity for refined young ladies during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, as illustrated by the character Amy in the movie Little Women. While the pastime has gone by the wayside in the era of entertainment via personal devices, some lovely examples of unknown artists’ handiwork remain to remind us of that bygone era.

This particular set of eight individually patterned bowls comes with a larger footed serving bowl. The bowls feature paintings of blackberries, raspberries and currants and are from Wisteria Antiques.

We like to use the small shallow bowls for yoghurt, berries and Favourite Granola. It’s a perennial favourite among guests, and I usually send them home with a supply to get them started before they make their own.

The purple glass plates are Colette, a discontinued pattern from Juliska, and the clear glass compote in the Graham pattern is also from Juliska. The napkin rings, napkins, runner and the square vase containing the granola are all from Pottery Barn.
