I seem to have a bird thing going these days, combined with a passion for series-ware. This peculiar combination had a very happy outcome, however: Gien’s Grand Ouiseaux set.

After some internal debate, I decided on the luncheon plates, sized between a dinner plate and a salad plate, and vastly underrated as a tableware choice. The casual theme of these plates points them towards being used in the earlier part of the day, either for breakfast & brunch. They’re the perfect size for a pile of veggies with a side of protein, or a sandwich with a few crudités, or a poached egg on toast, and we find ourselves reaching for them more often than not.
While there are many colours in the overall set, the browns and yellows jumped out at me. Yellow primroses are readily available at this time of year, so in they went. I sourced the yellow dinner plates and the tortoise glasses and carafes are from Pier 1. The salt & pepper shakers and linens are from Williams Sonoma and were purchased some time ago.

I love the salt and pepper set. with this distinctive set. We use luncheon plates more often than dinners plates. I find it easier to keep track of portion size. The primroses and pussy willow arrangements really finish off the display beautifully. Thanks for show the different pictures on the plates. It’s lovely to see the artwork. It would be hard to pick a favourite. I am intrigued with the conversation going on with the Sarcelles and the sinuous motion displayed by the Two geese in water.
The artwork is indeed very amusing, and beautifully executed. Gien produces really wonderful pieces and are among my favourites.
I’m with you on the portion sizes on the luncheon plates. Dinner plates have become inexorably larger it seems!
Your carafes truly elevate everything. I’m a fan of the brown tortoise shell colors and love rooster theme!! Creative combo. I applaud you, Helen.
Good old Pier 1. That tortoiseshell set was a steal – especially the carafes, which I got at end of the season. They’re useful as vases, too.
I can picture my tiny LED lighted pussy willow stems in centerpieces. Understand that you get multiple of uses from these settings. I sure would!!
Gien has some very fun and imaginative sets, and Grand Ouiseau is one of them. As you say, it could go any number of ways. Pussy Willows in the grocery stores right now. Hooray!
I agree with you. Gien has something for everyone, every taste, every color pallet. So hard to choose a favorite. Gladly you have several posts using Gien dinnerware and we can virtually enjoy so many! Gien tea pots are round and adorably chubby in each set of dishes, can’t go wrong.
Gien is one of my very favourite producers. The white is warm, the glazes are high quality and they’re colourful. A perfect combo in my books.
