We’ve had lots of family, big and small, here in the Cape over the last week. We were blessed with marvellous weather and spent many happy hours watching excited children dash in and out of the water, discover hermit crabs, dig holes for the tide to fill (that’s a hot tub, Nana!) and build sand castles. The end of each day saw an exodus of beach carts laden with soggy towels, sand toys, beach chairs and coolers, all as liberally coated with sand as the humans. Into the outdoor shower went the little ones, with an adult plying the hand-held spray to sluice sand, shampoo and body wash from each sandy, small body.
In previous years, when the average age of the participants was over 25, we all looked forward to discovering brand new recipes and cooking up a storm each evening. Since the small fry have arrived, however, we’ve relied more on meals that can be prepared fairly quickly and require less concentration. One thing has remained, though: a thirst (pun intended) for refreshing alcoholic beverages!
This drink is inspired from one we had at Pepe’s Wharf in Provincetown. The bartender gave us a list of the ingredients, and it took some experimenting until we got the qualities right. It’s a favourite, but be careful – these things go down like candy. It’s easy to be caught unawares…
A refreshingly tangy drink for post-beach evenings (or any hot evening for that matter)!
- 1 oz fresh lime juice
- 1 1/2 oz raspberry vodka
- 1/2 oz Cointreau or Triple Sec
- 6 oz ginger ale
- splash cranberry juice
- Fill a shaker with ice, add the lime juice, raspberry Vodka and Cointreau
- Shake vigorously
- Fill a large tumbler or highball glass 1/2 full with ice
- Strain the liquor mix into the glass of ice
- Fill with ginger ale and add a splash of cranberry juice (enough to give it a light pink colour)
- Garnish with a lime wedge
- Serving Size: 1
