Good call, Helen. As young children, my very elegant Grandma Madsen insisted children sit at big table with the and use fine crystal goblets just like adults. One year, one of my brothers took a big bite out of his stemware and had a mouthful of glass. I was too young to recall this but the tale was legendary.
That was the tone of the time, wasn’t it? Kids needed to learn how to sit up to a proper table. I have some sympathy with the viewpoint, but the timing has to be right. No point in making a stressful meal AND it’s important that kids learn to be comfortable around fine things, confident in their table manners. It’s definitely a balance.
I hope your brother didn’t hurt himself. Yikes!!! Your mother must have been horrified (on several levels).
