Growing up in the country, we kids loved riding in the back of my Dad’s pickup truck on sunny summer days, arms flung around the multiple dogs that invariably accompanied us. Unheard of in today’s safety-conscious society, during the ’60s, we rattled around in the bed of the truck, backsides taking a beating from the pot-hole-filled country roads.
Our pickup was yellow. Since this set of melamine plates from the Gilded Thistle features trucks in every other colour, I used a model yellow truck as the centrepiece. Fun, no?
It’s a country truck party! With bees hives and bee skeps.
Chickens, sheep, goats and corn.
Flowers and cats.
All things found in the country during those glorious, carefree days of summer.
Sunny yellow napkins sport sunflower napkin rings.
Mosser Arlington goblets in Hunter Green hold water or lemonade, making them perfect for a casual, outdoor meal.
Typical Golden Retriever behaviour (though it’s a Lab in the picture) … something is broken. Who, me? I had nothing to do with it. That plant attacked me. It jumped from the bed of the truck. It’s not my fault. No siree.
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday week, from Canada Day on Monday to Independence Day on Thursday. We had a houseful of family visiting from Canada and were very fortunate with the weather. The kids had a blast at the beach, with numerous floaties in and out of the water and coolers of snacks and drinks consumed. The barbecue sizzled, and salads, baked potatoes, cupcakes, and cakes were inhaled. Fireworks boomed and spluttered nightly. It was a glorious round of fun and memories.
They’ve all headed home now. A mountain of laundry has been washed, dried, and folded, and the final bed has been remade, awaiting their return. Sadly, it won’t be until next year, but we are heading to Scotland together for a week in August. Can’t wait!

I love those cute plates!
Thanks, Joy! They’re melamine, so fun for a picnic or the beach.
Adorable. I think these would be adorable for a young boys birthday party. Too bad we both have lots of granddaughters and not interested in trucks. Yet! Very cute and colorful table setting. Nice to have such wonderful memories of your childhood in the country.
I think the trucks are kind of girly with all those flowers, and suspect boys would make a rude, gagging noise if offered them. LOL.
Such a cute table Helen and what wonderful country memories. The truck plates are adorable. You must have had fun putting it together. Sounds like you had a great holiday with family and wishing you a lovely time in Scotland!
It was so much fun, Kim! I’ve used that little yellow truck several times and it always makes me smile.
There are ten of us in Scotland this time, unless one more child and entourage joins at the last minute (we have room). Photos to follow!
Dear Helen, Lovely summery table…just needs some corn on the cob. This summer has been absolutely crazy, veering from hot to cold to rainy to Sahara dust. Scotland’s had more than its share of rain from the Atlantic beasts. I can remember changing school clothes there 4 times a day in summer, starting with capes and woolens, on to cotton summer dresses, then to games gear, only to find it hailing when it came to lacrosse class, and back to wo0lies. Hope you have a beautiful trip!
Thank you, Beatrice! We are all looking forward to a week together in the Borders. We’ve been lucky on the last couple of family trips, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we get good weather again. But, as you well know, you take Britain as you find it. I’ll be sure to have wet weather gear on hand!
